"During my, now, long career as a saxophonist, I have had the great fortune to work with most of this country's finest professional Guitarists. Tim Walters is one of these players, and I always look forward to gigs that we are on together. Tim is also one of the best teachers that I have come across. The combination of being a great player
and an inspirational teacher is actually not that common, which is why I asked Tim to teach my son Guitar, and why his name is first off my lips whenever I am asked to recommend someone"
Chris White Saxophonist: Dire Straits, Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams & many more.

Comments on Jonathan's book Riff Training Level 1

'This is a superb resource that demystifies a lot of the ignored or misinterpreted intricacies of modern metal guitar. There is a lot of excellent advice for developing a systematic approach to practice, and for feeling the intricate syncopations and displaced rhythms that characterise much modern metal and progressive music. It deserves a place in any guitarist's library of instructional material.'
Tom Stevenson – UK

'When I first approached Shred Training Volume 1 book, I was sceptical.  I’ve read through several of the more popular metal instructional books and media, such as Troy Stetina’s Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar and John Petrucci’s Rock Discipline. While both pieces of media are fine references, written by respectable guitarists, they lack key details to maintaining a proper practice regimen, monitoring your progress, stretching and relaxing, and applying your technical advances to actual music, composed by Jonathan himself.
The exercises progress in terms of difficulty. Of course every instructional book progresses this way, but what notches Shred Training above the rest is how each exercise is formed.  Most other instructional books fill their pages with useless and repetitive permutations of exercises that focus on the same technique and muscle group each time. Jonathan Strange’s exercises are precise and to the point, carefully focusing on technique, rendering drastic results when applied correctly.
Jonathan Strange’s methods of practice were strange to me when I first tried them. I had always used a metronome to keep time and build up speed, but I never knew how to properly apply it. Jonathan also incorporates a timer in the practice routine, a tool many never use to practice guitar. But by simply abandoning my old practice schedule, and adopting Jonathan Strange’s routine, my technique has vastly improved, and my gains have been tremendous.  The practicing strategies in this book pretty much guarantee gains in speed and endurance everyday. In terms of single string alternate picking, I maxed out at a sloppy 163 BMP. Now I can play comfortably at 194 bmp, and maxing out at 210 BMP.  Shred Training Vol 1 changes the way you practice, and the way you think of practicing.'
